EVENT INFORMATION
We, Royal Runners Club Calicut, are happy to announce the ultra-running challenge Season 2 at Vayalada Hill Station on Sunday 03 December 2023. This event is the second Edition of the ultra run conducted in the same year March 5th and its second of such in Northern Kerala, conducted in partnership with Responsible Vayalada Group and residents.
The event is scheduled to be conducted in two categories, 30KM and 60KM with an elevation gain of a mind-blowing 1800++ and 3200++ meters . We, as an organizer, strongly feel that this will be a litmus test for even an experienced runner.
Both the categories will be flagged off from Balusseri High School, timing will be informed later, a township on the foothill of Vayalada Hill Station. The run goes through exciting routes like Nambikulam Peak, Mantanicheri Hills, Amard Waterfalls, kariyathumpara, Churathiode Hills etc, and ends at Vayalda Peak.
Why Vayalada
Vayalada Hills are an extension of the Western Ghat’s arm towards the west and it has all the features of typical Western Ghat Mountains, but free from wildlife. It has steep climbs that test a runner, oozing breezes from the Arabian Sea, sweet calls from an array of rare species of birds, serene water bodies that flow from an altitude of 900 meters, and a juggling waterfall where runners can enjoy a dip and of course the serene view of Western Ghats Mountain regions on the Eastern side couple with a massive reservoir on the foothills.
How to reach
By Road: Vayalada is 42 Km from the nearest city of Kozhikode, alias Calicut, which is famous for its wonderful food culture. There are frequent public transportation services from Calicut city to Balussery which the major township near the starting point.
By Train: Calicut is well connected by rail with all parts of the country. All there are direct trains from the metros like Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai. A runner can easily get off the station and take a bus to Balussery after enjoying the local cuisines.
By Air: An international airport in Calicut also connects domestic airports. It is located 55km, approximately, away from the starting point.
The event
Royal Runners Club, based in Calicut, is one of the prominent running commmunity in Malabar, North Kerala. The club produces raw talents they made telling impacts on numerous marathons in the country. The club successfully conducted various marathon events in the past.
As a pioneering ultra-running event in Northern Kerala, the event is conducting in two categories, 60 km and 30 km and both categories offer a minimum of 1800 and 3200 plus meter elevation. The cut off point for 30 km is 6 hours whereas the 60 km route will be having multiple cut off point at various parts of the circuit, the details will be informed later once the registration process completed. Yet, the maximum gun time that can be taken is limited to 12 hours.
There will be ample volunteering throughout the route to offer hydration and other aid to runners and of course post run refueling will be available at the finishing point apart from medal and drop off facilities, for those who chosen for such add-on services.
